Oscar Howe Biography - Read Full Bio

Oscar Howe (1915-1983), a Dakota Indian of the Yanktonai tribe, was born at Joe Creek on the Crow Creek Reservation of South Dakota, the son of George Tikute Howe and Ella Fearless Bear. Although he earned degrees at Dakota Wesleyan University (1952) and the University of Oklahoma (1954), it was his training at the famous Studio of the Santa Fe Indian School (1935-1938) that prepared him for his leading role in American Indian painting.
