BROOKINGS, S.D.—A museum is the last place you’d expect to welcome a food fight, but that’s exactly what’s in store for the South Dakota Art Museum for January.

The Museum will host the two-day workshop “Food Fight: Making a Kitchen Quilt” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 17 and 18. Instructor will be Judith Trager, curator of the Potluck Exhibition, on display at the South Dakota Art Museum January 14 – March 28, 2004.

Trager has a studio in Boulder, CO, and an impressive list of teaching experience in art quilts and textiles, both in the United States and abroad. She has taught quilting classes in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Colorado, Maryland, California and Illinois.

Participants in the two-day workshop at the South Dakota Art Museum will design and make a small contemporary quilt suitable for hanging in the kitchen or family room. They will learn simple fusing, embroidery and machine applique techniques using printed food fabrics combined with plain cottons. Retro fabrics, such as old printed tablecloths, dishtowels or aprons, can also be used.

Cost to attend is $115 for members and $130 for non-members. Supplies needed to bring to class include a sewing machine, stitching tools and assorted fabrics. For more information, call the South Dakota Art Museum at (605) 688-5423.

The South Dakota Art Museum is located on Medary Avenue at Harvey Dunn Street on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings.
