The South Dakota Art Museum is pleased to present a survey of paintings by noted artist Warren Rosser. Entitled Warren Rosser: To be continued……” Selected paintings from 1998 to 2004.

“To be continued……” includes 16 selected paintings created between 1998 and 2004 by artist Warren Rosser. The exhibit spans six years of paintings that Rosser created after his transition from three-dimensional work. These large colorful acrylic paintings were constructed using palette knives, stencils, squeegees and masking tape, in lieu of paintbrushes.

Born in South Wales in 1942, Warren Rosser obtained his training at the Cardiff College of Art and at the University of London. He then moved to the United States in 1972. Rosser now lives in Kansas City where he is the Chair of the Painting Department and William T. Kemper Distinguished Professor of Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute.

After dedicating most of the 1980s and 1990s to three-dimensional works of art, Rosser turned to painting in 1998. Since then, he has created approximately 300 nonobjective paintings. According to Rosser, “When I started making paintings again, I decided a couple of things. I wanted my work to be very large because I wanted them to be color environments and I knew I wanted to use very intense color. I wanted a sense of playfulness. The other decision I made was not to use conventional materials. I wanted the paintings to come from a different place.”

Warren Rosser: “To be continued……” will be on view at the South Dakota Art Museum from August 4, 2004 to December 5, 2004. An artist reception will be held on Friday, September 24, 2004 from 4:00 –7:30 pm at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, SD. Sound Artist, Dwight Frizzell will perform at the reception.
